What Is California Proposition 65?

California Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California-specific law that requires businesses to provide warnings when products may expose consumers to any of the more than 900 chemicals listed by the State of California.

The law is intended to provide consumers with information about potential chemical exposure. It is a right-to-know law, not a product safety law, and it does not prohibit the sale of products that contain or may expose consumers to these listed substances.

Does a Proposition 65 Warning Mean a Product Is Unsafe?

No.

A Proposition 65 warning does not mean that a product is unsafe or that it violates federal safety standards. In many cases, the warning is required even when exposure levels are significantly below the safety limits established by leading health authorities, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Why Can Natural Supplements Contain Trace Levels of Heavy Metals?

Natural herbs, botanicals, roots, fruits, and other plant-based ingredients absorb minerals from the soil and water in which they grow. As a result, naturally occurring trace amounts of elements such as lead and other heavy metals may be present in finished herbal and dietary supplements.

These trace elements are not intentionally added during manufacturing. Rather, they occur naturally in the environment and may remain in raw botanical ingredients despite careful sourcing and processing.
